Flu Season and Staying Well

Seasonal spotlight

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, flu season makes its loathsome return. Whilst many of us shrug it off as “just the flu,” it can be far from trivial. For vulnerable groups – the elderly, young children, and those with underlying conditions flu can be more than serious – it can be deadly.

According to the World Health Organization, seasonal influenza affects around 1 billion people globally each year, with an estimated 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness. Tragically, it is responsible for between 290,000 and 650,000 respiratory deaths annually.

The burden is not evenly spread either – WHO notes that 99 percent of influenza-related deaths in children under five occur in developing countries. These figures are a sobering reminder that flu is far more than a passing inconvenience, and why prevention, vaccination and early care remain so important.

Flu has a seasonal rhythm, and there are a few reasonsit thrives as the days grow colder. The virus itself survives longer in cool, dry air, which means those tiny droplets from coughs and sneezes can linger and spread more easily.

At the same time, we spend more hours indoors with windows shut, often in close contact with others, giving the virus the perfect environment to hop from person to person. Add in the fact that our immune systems can be a little less robust in winter – thanks to less sunlight, lower vitamin D levels and the general strain of shorter days – and it’s no surprise that flu finds its moment in the colder months.

The flu is not the same as a bad cold. It comes on suddenly over the course of just a few hours, with symptoms such as high fever, aches, exhaustion, congestion, and even digestive issues. It can leave you bedridden, and recovery often takes longer than expected. That’s why prevention matters.

The flu vaccine remains the most effective protection against flu, and it’s widely available across the UK. But beyond vaccination, lifestyle choices play a huge role in how resilient your immune system is. Think of your immune system as a team. Sleep, nutrition, exercise and stress management are the players – and if one is missing, the team struggles.

Families and workplaces can prepare together. Encouraging good hygiene, supporting people to stay home when unwell, and promoting vaccination all help reduce spread. A culture of “pushing through” illness often backfires, leading to more people off sick in the long run.

We recognise that cultural beliefs shape how people view illness and vaccination. Open, respectful conversations can help bridge gaps and support informed choices.

Flu season tips

  • Get vaccinated: Even if you’re not eligible for an NHS flu vaccination, it’s easy to get yourself vaccinated at a pharmacy or walk-in clinic. It’s quick, safe and effective.
  • Wash your hands: Simple, but powerful. Soap and water reduce the spread of germs dramatically.
  • Boost your diet: Making sure that you’re getting the right nutrition is essential for staying well and keeping your immune system in tip-top shape.
  • Stay active: Moderate exercise helps immune function. Even a daily walk makes a difference.
  • Rest and recover: If you do catch the flu, don’t try to ‘push through’. Rest is essential for recovery.
  • Keep your distance: If you’re unwell, avoid close contact with others until you’re better.

Flu season doesn’t have to mean weeks of sniffles and sick days. With a little preparation and care, you can navigate the colder months with energy and resilience. Think of it as seasonal self-care – a way of honouring your body’s needs as the year winds down.
