Health surveillance

Health surveillance

An ongoing and repeated health assessment programme to detect any risks or early signs of ill health in employees, that may be caused by their work.

Why is health surveillance needed?

Health surveillance provides an overview of workers’ health over time to spot early signs of ill-health that could be caused by work, so these can be dealt with promptly before becoming a long-term problem.

As an employer, it is your legal responsibility to ensure that your workers are protected from getting hurt or ill while at work, or through the job they do. Regardless of the practices you may have put in place to minimise workplace risks, health assessments may still be required.

What health surveillance services do I need?

We can help you with this. Health surveillance assessments are only required for employees who work in higher-risk environments. The type of surveillance needed will vary between different businesses and industries.

At Spire Occupational Health, we work extremely closely with our clients to develop, implement, and maintain both a targeted and appropriate health surveillance programme specific to your organisation.

Health surveillance

Is required for certain high-hazard work. It is a legal requirement for employers to carry out health surveillance for employees exposed to these hazards:

  • Asbestos
  • Lead
  • Ionising radiation
  • Compressed air
  • Substances listed in Section 6 of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)
  • Safety critical tasks in the rail industry

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) will expect all businesses to carry out a health and safety risk assessment.

If your risk assessment identifies a significant risk to employee health that cannot be removed completely, then health surveillance will be legally required.

These include environments where there are sustained and increased risks, including, but not limited to:

  • Noise
  • Dust
  • Fumes
  • Solvents
  • Repetitive tasks
  • Vibration
  • Manual handling
  • Lone working
  • Working at heights
  • Confined Space
  • Night Shift work
  • Crane operations
  • Occupational driving
  • Work in extreme weather and temperature conditions
  • Biological agents
  • Electro-magnetic exposure
  • And more.
